Heading into the 2026-27 NBA season, the San Antonio Spurs should have the best roster in the NBA. Provided that everyone stays healthy, the Spurs will continue to be led by All-Stars Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox. Devin Vassell, Stephon Castle, and Tobias Harris will round out the starting five.

On top of that, Dylan Harper, Luke Kornet, Keldon Johnson, Julian Champagnie, Jayden Quaintance, Harrison Barnes, and Carter Bryant will be coming off the bench. Four of those players would crack the starting five on most teams.

Looking at their lineup, there’s no reason for the Spurs to take a step back next season. After winning 62 games and making it all the way to the NBA Finals, the Spurs should be looking to take a big step forward, especially with their offseason additions.

However, even with a young roster, the clock is already ticking.

Spurs to Re-Tool Roster In the Coming Seasons

Ask fans right now, and they’re probably thrilled by the prospect of trading away De’Aaron Fox. After all, he dropped the ball several times in the Finals, and Dylan Harper is waiting for a bigger role.

However, he isn’t the only player who might soon find his way off the roster.

Keldon Johnson only has one season under contract, and Devin Vassell only has two. The Spurs seem committed to Wembanyama, Castle, and Harper, but with their massive salaries looming, that means there will be a lot of roster turnover.

And there’s no guarantee that the Spurs will be able to readily replace them.

That doesn’t mean that fans or the front office should panic. Brian Wright has done a mostly solid job in the NBA Draft, and with Wembanyama in town, the Spurs are a free agent destination. However, winning 62 games is a massive feat. They seem poised to do it again next year, but after that, everything is up in the air.

As long as Wembanyama is on the roster, the Spurs will be in contention. Right now, he has an excellent supporting cast, and all of the young stars are only getting better.

However, as players like Vassell, Johnson, and eventually Harris test the free agency waters, and Fox remains in trade rumors, there is a lot of room for error.

Wright’s track record suggests that most of his future moves will work out, but that’s never a guarantee.
